So they blame HAL: they conclude that the computer is malfunctioning and decide to shut him off. But after Dave Bowman goes on a space walk and brings the AE-35 back in, neither he nor Frank Poole can find anything wrong with it. HAL detects a problem with the AE-35, a piece of equipment used to maintain contact with Earth.
